Sweden, Arctic snow shoe trip and northernlights, Torne River.

11-18th Februay 2019

This is a hiking trip to help get fit and into shape!

Road to cabin on left: photo Simon Matzinger

The Swedish Arctic Circle on snowshoes see remote forest, the famous frozen Torne River and hopefully some of the elusive wildlife (moose, reindeer, fox, martin, lynx and grouse). With luck, there may be a chance to see the magnificent northern lights.

February is cold and you’ll have to work hard for this trip. There’s always a sauna and good food at the end of a tiring day.

We stay in a delightful warm cabin. It houses five people – three single beds and a double. There is another cabin a few meters away, which we can also use. The trip is self-catering but all food will be provided and we cook together. So it’s all hands on!

Outside there is a wood sauna which we can use anytime (it takes about two hours to heat up but you can stay all night!)

This is a unique trip, not offered by others in such a hands-on active way. It would suit those who dream of such a trip but never quite make it. Thebluespace co-operative are offering this as a once only trip. An experienced guide who knows the area will accompany you the whole time. Remember this is the real thing – you will be remote, walking in the snow in the cold and having to chip in with cooking…!

This is a good fun trip to challenge yourself in a safe environment. Stay Strong!

There is a good internet connection in the cabin and a TV.

Day 1.  Arrive Kirruna, pick up and drive to cabin. 1.5 hours approx. Orientaion. Picture of the cabin on left.

Day 2.  Snow Shoe Hike along the frozen Torne river to some small frozen rapids where we have a snack and enjoy the white silence. We continue to a tiny settelment (empty) before returning to the cabin (anywhere between 4-5 hours of leg work!)  Wood sauna in the evening with a snow dip – optional!

Day 3.  Snow Shoe hike across the frozen Torne river to a small creek with a day cabin. Return by a differnt route across the river and frozen forest (4-5 hours).  Wood sauna in the evening.

Day 4. Snow shoe hike into the wild space behind the cabin. A chance for everyone to take a lead and forge a path through the deep snow among the trees. A circular loop (4-5 hours). Wood Sauna in the evening.

Day 5.  A long Snow Shoe hike to a cabin in the woods where we stay the night.  We make food and settle for the night. There is no electricity. A great chance to experience the silence and solitude of the Arctic Circle.

Day 6.  Snoe Shoe hike back using a different route where everyone has a chance to lead and use navigation skills.  Wood sauna in the evening.

Day 7.  A short hike along the Torne river to a small public (and empty) wood sauna on the river bank. Time to relax and enjoy the space and frozen view,

Day 8. Return to Kirruna and flight home.
