Description:

Helambu is a Sherpa settlement to the northeast of Kathmandu, which is well known for its Buddhist monastery and charming hills, enchanting alpine scenery, rivers, valleys and rhododendron thickets (in flower in spring. Here in a jeweled setting, midst jade green mountains and turquoise streams, is a cluster of medieval villages, colorful and contrasting, where the air breathes excitement. Extending from north of Taramarang to the tree limit, the Helambu area covers several highland Sherpa villages scattered around and above the Melamchi Gorge, while the real highlands begin from Timbu and Nurpugaon above Keul.All around the alpine region of Helambu are unspoilt areas of Himalayan beauty where the crystal clear air sweeps down form the snow-capped mountains of Langtang Lirung (7,245m.) and Leonpogang (7,083m.).The three major villages Tarkeyghyang (9300 ft), Melamchi (8300 ft) and Sermathang (8670 ft), each have a distinct personality of their own, though they are only hours apart on foot.

Itinerary:

Day 1:
Drive 40 minutes to Sundharijal from Thamel, trail starts up concrete steps beside the drinking water pipeline. 600 meters hiking up, Mulkharka, at the back of the great of Kathmandu valley. Less steep terrain continues to Patibhanjyang (1,770m.).

Day 2:
The trail rises and falls through rocky route to Kutumsang (2470 meters) passing Langtang National Park entry office.

Day 3:
Beautiful scenery of mountains Gosainkunda and Langtang ridge. Trail through forest crossing army check post to Tharepati (3490m) and heading toward Melamchigaun (2530m).

Day 4:
The trail drop down to Melamchi Khola and trekking up the other sides of Tarkegyang valley (2743m), the largest village of Helambu region.

There are a couple of alternative routes from Tarkegyang:

Day 5:
Trail drops continuing throughout Rhododendron forest, Tsortens and numbers of Mani walls on the way to Kiul (1280m).

Day 6:
Descending down along the riverbank to Talamarang (940m) and climbing to Patibhanjyang (1770m) where the Helambu circuit is completed.

Day 7:
Down to Sundarijal and drive back to Kathmandu.

Alternative:

Day 5:
A gentle decent through beautiful forests to Sermathang.

Day 6:
Down to Kakani and steep decent to Melamchi Bazaar.

Day 7:
Drive back to Kathmandu.
